How it all began

Dynamic Earth first opened its doors in July of 1999. The land was donated to the project by British Gas and Scottish and Newcastle (now Heineken).

Very large grants from the Millennium Commission, the City of Edinburgh Council and Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothians, along with donations from many other individuals, companies, trusts and statutory supporters, made it possible for a RIBA award winning building designed by Hopkins Architects to be created to tell the story of our planet.

Dynamic Earth is committed to engaging with people of all ages and all backgrounds and to enthuse our visitors about the origins of the Earth and how our choices impact the planet. Education is central to our mission.

Current Trustees of Dynamic Earth Charitable Trust include the following individuals:

  • Ian Ritchie, Chairman
  • David Cochrane
  • Gary Davis
  • Colin Graham
  • Malcolm Thoms
  • Sally Weatherly
  • The Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh
